The Age of Sail Update

A Suggestion to Improve Sailboats

Two frigates unleash broadsides into the other at close range.

Sailboats in CCNet are a type of ship that is widely used by many players in CCNet and are long-overdue for a comprehensive update.

  1. The biggest part of this update is cannons. New cannon types will be added to allow for greater variety in sailboat combat.
    • 18-pounder: a standard gun of smaller ship classes such as caravels and large cogs. Limited to caravels and cogs. Costs 1 firepower. 50% damage, same reload time, of current "small cannon."

    • 24-pounder: a standard gun of warships and merchant ships alike. This cannon is similar to the current "small cannon" except with 1.5x the reload time.

    • 32-pounder: a standard of Ships of the Line such as East Indiamen that carries a heavy shot with a long reload time. Limited to caravels and east indiamen. Costs 2 firepower. 20% more damage, 2x reload time, of current "small cannon."

    • Carronade: A short-barreled cannon that fires a massive, powerful shot at close range. Effective when brawling other large ships. Limited to caravels and east indiamen. Costs 4.5 firepower. 80% more damage, 3.5x longer reload time, 60% range, as current "small cannon."

    • Alongside the new cannons is a new means of arming them; "powder charges." These are made with 1 gunpowder and 1 fabric for 16 powder charges, needed alongside the block of cobblestone for firing the cannon. This is simply due to the fact that a single piece of gunpowder also makes 16 4-inch shells which are significantly more powerful and a single shot for a very weak sailboat cannon requiring the same amount of gunpowder can get very expensive, so this would make it more fair and more accessible for those wishing to use their cannons for self defense, what little good they'd do.
  2. Ship sizes need to be generally increased across the board to allow for a greater ability to add detail to sailboats.
    • Cog sizes increased from 500 to 1,000 blocks.
    • Caravel sizes increased from 2,000 to 3,000 blocks.
    • East Indiaman sizes increased from 5,000 to 7,500 blocks.
  3. Sailboats gain a 1 m/s speed increase when they are within 20% of the maximum size of their craft type (percentage dependent on the maximum size of the ship).
  4. Sailboat firepower limits are increased significantly to be both more realistic and more fun.
    • Cog firepower increased from 2 to 10.
    • Caravel firepower increased from 6 to 20.
    • East Indiaman Firepower increased from 12 to 36.
  5. Sailboats experience a 50% decrease in speed and rotation time after 40% of their wool blocks have been destroyed.
  6. All wooden block types gain a slight resistance value to allow for longer fights and slightly more durability. They also take 50% longer to burn.
  7. Wool blocks become a decoration block on wooden ships (but still a required block). This is to allow an enemy to effectively disable a wooden ship for boarding and seizing by taking out its propulsion without a risk of sinking the ship. To offset this, wood block requirements are slightly increased.
