Currently Torpedos activation distance is not long enough to make them strategic. There is also the unintended effect of sometimes moving away from oncoming torpedos and the way ships 'jump' leads to what movecrafters call 'internalled' or the ship blowing up from the inside.
Originally these torpedos were implemented to be more skilful, I think even a small increase of 25% would be enough to solve this.
Torpedo damage also does far too much % when hitting unarmoured parts of ships. I've noticed this shortens the length of ship duels. In a 1 v 1 I did on nations there was barely any gunnery exchange, and most of the heavy lifting was done when I aimed the torpedos into a hole I had quite easily created.
The new torpedos have succeeded in making movecraft fights more enjoyable, but I do believe they are slightly overpowered right now, one of the aims of the update was to make ship duels last longer, but I do not think they are currently.
