Welcome to the 13th development blog for Project Hegemon. In this post, we will explain custom crops and foods.

Custom Foods

Let's begin with custom foods. You might remember that buildings in TownyBuildings require "workers", which are supplied by House buildings. A House can supply one of the three classes of worker - low wealth, medium wealth, and high wealth. Each class consumes different types of food:

  • low wealth workers consume vanilla food,
  • medium wealth workers consume "standard" custom foods,
  • and high wealth workers consume "luxury" custom foods.

Additionally, each climate has its own standard and luxury foods. A House in a temperate biome will consume temperate standard foods, whereas one in an arid biome will consume arid standard foods.

Here is the list of custom foods by climate:

List of Foods

Temperate

Semi-Arid Tropical Arid Boreal Cold
Standard 1 Pizza (#21) Falafel Wrap (#1) Pineapple Fried Rice (#5) Morasa Polo (#9) Blueberry Pie (#13) Salmon with Cloudberries (#17)
Standard 2 Hamburger (#22) Shawarma (#2) Coconut Chicken Curry (#6) Maamoul Rotmos (#14) Fiskisupa (#18)
Luxury 1 Strawberry Chocolate Cake (#23) Lamb Beyti (#3) Biryani (#7) Kabsa (#11) Ragoût de Pattes de Porc (#15) Finnbiff (#19)
Luxury 2 Ratatouille (#20) Tagine (#4) Pho (#8) Zarda (#12) Karelian Hot Pot (#16) N/A

Currently, custom foods do not give potion effects like regeneration. This is because we're not yet sure this will be balanced with our combat system

Food Spoilage

Vanilla and custom foods will spoil after some time. Generally, produce (such as wheat and carrots) lasts the longest - up to 4 weeks - while meals last up to 2 weeks. Spoiled food becomes "Rotten Food" which can be composted.

Standard vs Luxury Foods

The most advanced production methods need high wealth workers, who need luxury foods

Compared to standard foods, luxury foods require more ingredients that need to be grown outside of their climate. For example, Ratatouille (a temperate luxury food) needs cumin and olives, which are both grown in semi-arid biomes. So why bother with luxury foods? Simply put, high-wealth workers consume them, and these workers are needed to run the most advanced production methods for buildings.

Custom Crops

Coffee and chili pepper plants

All those custom foods need their own custom crops!

Temperate Semi-Arid Tropical Arid Boreal Cold
Tomatoes Olives Coconuts Dates Blueberries Cloudberries
Grapes Chickpeas Rice Saffron Parsnip
Lettuce Cumin Pineapples
Strawberries Pistachios Coffee Beans
Onions   Chili Peppers

Changes

Custom crops are similar to the ones on Nations, but with a few mechanical and visual changes. For example, most crops now have multiple growth stages. Also, watering a plant using a watering can will speed up its growth. Watering cans can be refilled by right-clicking water.

Custom crops need to be grown in farm plots. Upgrading the Farmhouse building in your town unlocks additional farm plots.

Conclusion

As always, if you have any questions or feedback, let me know in the comments.

Do foods and crops spoil in irl time (server uptime), or like minecraft days?

Can towns grow crops from any biome if they have the seeds, or are they restricted to their native climate? like the regional plant growth in nations(as a town that is based on Greenland it sucks ;-;)

How much faster is watered growth vs natural growth? Does the watering cane have durability? or a cooldown on how many times can u water plants

Cold biomes have no "Luxury 2" food listed. Is that intentional to make cold harder(pls dont) or still being decided on what to make it?

edit: what number is mammoul? although I literally have a mammoul in my hand I cant guess xD+ what are 34 and 35, they look like ice cubes could they be used in custom drinks or maybe like cooling machines?(cooling a machines with ice is a bad idea irl)

1. They spoil in IRL days

2. It's climate-based, like on Nations, but seasons also play a role. For example, melons can grow in temperate biomes - but only during summer.

3. Watered growth is 15% faster, although this is just a starting value. I think it will change after testing.

4. It's actually because I couldn't come up with one! Open to suggestions, but it would need to use at least two crops grown outside cold biomes as ingredients.

5. #34 is apatite and #35 is fertiliser (made from apatite). I'm still not sure whether we'll require fertiliser to be made from apatite, but if we do then I think we'll make it a resource found in arid/cold biomes. Maamoul isn't in that texture showcase; here's what it looks like:

I'm a bit worried about the expiration time since I tend to hoard, but I guess since it needs to be consumed I won't have that much trouble with that. Also, do workers ask for specific meals or just one of the categories (standard1/2, luxury 1/2)? Are 1 and 2 different categories aswell or just standard and luxury?

That's completely understandable. The rationale behind expiration is to stimulate consistent demand for food and agricultural items. We think this will help increase trade. However, we'll need to see if that actually happens.

Workers ask for the category of food (standard or luxury). 1 and 2 are not different categories, the numbering is just for the table
